Lighting is crucial when it comes to your Sonoma County wedding pictures and it’s important that you understand what you are going for and how to make that possible. Unless you have decided to take your own pictures (hopefully not, you’re going to be very busy that day), then you will have hired a photographer, like us here at Adrian Tamblin Photography of course!
We’re professionals and lighting for Sonoma weddings is a critical part of what we do when creating your perfect wedding pictures.
It all starts with a few important questions…
Are you going to be having a daytime or nighttime wedding? This part is crucial because lighting comes into action here. You need to make sure that you are in the right place at the right time, and the photographer that you pick also understands this.
A good tip is going to the venue before the wedding at the time of day that you’re having the wedding. If it’s indoors, you can asses what it looks like in the reception area; such as dimmer switches, and if you can position the lights to be centered on specific areas, such as tables and the dance floor.
If you decide to have an outdoor wedding, set at nighttime, make sure that you have plenty of lights set up so not only people can see what they are eating, but so that the photographer isn’t blinding them with his flash. Some of my favorite pictures taken are at night are with stringed lights hung up everywhere. Doesn’t that sound lovely?
Candles also create nice ambiance for an evening wedding. The lighting is soft and the photographer can get some really good shots. These are all things that the photographer should know, but it’s also important that you think of them, too!
Have you ever walked into a romantic restaurant with the lights turned way up? No, of course not!
Bright lights are not romantic, and should only be used when you are trying to find your keys at the end of the night. There are many ways that you can keep it well-lit without blinding your guests. Other than just plain candles, try gobos, which are circular stencils that are placed over the light which then project a pattern. You can do anything from flowers to designs to your wedding date.
Whatever you decide to do, just make sure that you are part of the process in some way. There is nothing worse than not enjoying your own wedding because your got blinded by a light pointed right into your eyes. Test the waters and fix any problems beforehand.
