Anytime I’m afforded the opportunity to hang out with athletes at the top of their game I do, and this past Sat was no exception. I was asked by Capo Test Team Captain Jonathan Lee to take some photographs for thier teams 1st annual training camp. Myself and fellow teammate Keith Flood of Keith Flood Photography jumped at the opportunity. We charged our batteries, cleaned our cannon L lenses and geared up for what was an excellent 70 degree day by the bay. The photo shoot began in Petaluma at the home offices of “The Hive“. Yuri Hauswald – Brand Ambassador for Gu Energy Labs had the team well fueled with a full array of Gu’s most popular gels and drinks. The team was looking sharp in their Capo GS-13 kits and I was excited to get them set up for the first posed shot of the day. I bounced my wireless flash into a 60″ reflective umbrella on one side and then filled in shadows on the other side using my Diffuser 60 soft box. Behind the scene photos were taken by Keith Flood.
Who is Capo Test Team?
Capo Test Team is a composite of the who’s, who’s of Sonoma County cyclists – Riders include Alex Brookhouse, Charlie Scheider, Jonathan Lee, Troy Newton, Nick Kersmarki, Yuri Hauswald, Dr. Todd Weizenberg and Professional Cyclist Steven Cozza. The team was put together by Capo President Gary Vasconi and Captain Jonathan Lee.
The name CAPO translate to Leader or Boss and these guys definetley commanded presence out on the road. The route for the day was to include some of the most scenic roads in Sonoma County, which included Chileno Valley, Marshall Wall, Hwy 1, and Tomales. With Keith driving and myself shooting the group, the pace truck was just what the team needed to stay safe while still allowing me to get some nice shots. Keith did an excellent job of anticipating the pace at which the team was traveling. With both Keith and I being cyclists ourselves we know just how fast the down hill speeds can be. These guys were ripping it, and it proved difficult to get good shots with all the bouncing around on country roads. As the accent occurred and the pace slowed it allowed me to get the shots I wanted. The front row vantage point was up close and personal and the shots below tell the story of the day. In a few instances we raced ahead and set up shots of the riders passing by. When they reached the top of Marshall Wall, Keith had his drone quad copter 100 feet above capturing video on his Go Pro. Video footage here.
The day for us ended in Tomales. As we parted ways local cyclists approached Keith and asked us what we were up to? It seems the presence of the team combined with drones and photography gear really created quite the stir in the sleepy town. It’s not every day they have drones and elaborate photography lights set up in small town. As you can see from the pics, it brought a smile to everyones face.
