Photoshop Trick – Focus Stacking

Have you ever wondered how to add depth of field to an image that is not attainable straight out of the camera? The technique is similar to how you create and HDR image, but the difference with Focus stacking is that you are blending the focus of the image rather than the exposure as you are with HDR.

All three of the above pics combined into one. All areas from front to back are in focus.

Landscape and macro photographers who want to have foreground and background images tack sharp will most benefit from this technique as they simply can’t get these types of shots straight out of camera.

Above you will see 4 photos, the first 3 have different focus points form front to back. The last image has all 3 photos stacked and then flattened using this technique. Check out Gaven Hoey’s video on how the it is achieved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IMiKUnVAFks
